So I wanted my first ever blog post to be running related…………. Alas, the afteroon before our local La Sportiva trail race, Menan Butte Challenge…… I took my training partner, black lab Molly, out for a spin on road bike in 35-40 mph winds. Head down, going 14 mph into cross headwind along country road along farm fields with Molly bounding behind in grassy borrow pit. A pickup truck approaches from opposite direction just emerging from protected tree lined area into open area, I look back to make sure Molly is off the road, turn just in time to see a something lifting out of truck bed and flying at me. Thoughts of disbelief, partially duck, and get creamed by the queensize matteress projectile. Lying in a heap in borrow pit, wind knocked out, I assess body parts and getting breath back…………….. Apologetic driver, bent bike, curious dog. Limp home with lump on head, several cracked and bruised ribs and dinged up knee hitting bike top tube. Running on hold for now, but am healing, abeit slowly. Will continue to train for planned L’Etape 2008. http://www.letapedutour.com/ on July 6th in France as cycling is manageable with ribs.

Ouch! Can relate as some of my worst injuries have also been dog related… including ‘bikejoring’ (think dogsledding on a mountain bike).
Hope you heal quickly!
You got hit in the head by a flying mattress while bicycling.
OK. Not much one can say about that, eh? You probably didn’t walk out the door that morning with your wife calling out, “Don’t forget to watch out for flying mattress’s dear.”
Hope you’re back soon, and bikes are still great for injury recovery.
